Japanese Wedding Ceremony

The Japanese shrine wedding ceremony originated from the wedding of the Emperor Taisho in the Meiji era, and was later popularized among the general public. The traditional form is to be dressed in pure white for a slolemn ceremony shared only with blood-related relatives. Perhaps the impression of a shrine wedding is rather rigid. Because of the rules and traditions of the shrine, it seems more ceremonial compared to a free Western-style wedding, so the number of new couples choosing a shrine wedding is gradually increasing.

  1. Ceremony flow All members participating the wedding will form a line to enter the shrine, and after a ritual ceremony, the main priest will report to the god about the marriage of the couple. The ceremony will include rituals such as the "san-san-kudo" ceremomy, and the entire ceremony will take about 30 minutes.
  2. The rituals are mainly performed by the groom. Reading the oath is also done by the groom alone.
  3. Family oriented wedding Originally, the meaning of marriage in Japan was only for the groom, bride, and their family. Basically, only family and relatives could participate at a wedding. Nowadays, it is not rare for friends to participate, but to only to watch the ceremony from outside. (According to the regulations of the shrine, there may be situations where friends cannot participate)
  4. Limits to recording & photography Because of the belief of the gods, certain rituals during the wedding are not allowed to be recorded by photograph or video. Some shrines refuse all staff from filming during the ceremony. In this case, we will try to take photos before the ceremony in order to capture your memories.
